The spider is a St Andrews Cross spider, aparently named for the cross of St Andrew which adorns the Scottish flag. The St Andrews Cross spider belongs to the common Orb or Wheel weaving spiders but the St Andrews Cross is easily the most impressive. I believe this is the female of the species and easily recognisable because of her size and spectacular colourings, while the male is drab and dreary.
